‘Harassed by HOD’, doctor ends life in hostel | India News – Times of India

DEHRADUN:A 25-year-old junior resident doctor at a private medical institute in Dehradun died by suicide on Friday due to alleged harassment by the HOD over submission of his thesis. The body was found in his hostel room.His classmate, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he had faced rejection several times while trying to submit his thesis. “He was under pressure as the submission deadline was nearing and missing it would have meant that he had to pay a penalty or miss exams.On Friday, he again tried to submit it, but the professor rejected it and tore it up in front of him,” the student said. Police was notified of his death and they proceeded to interrogate some students. Patel Nagar police station in-charge, inspector Kamal Lunthi, said, “A team visited the institute to question his classmates. His family also reached Dehradun on Saturday. We are waiting for the postmortem report to ascertain the exact cause of death.”Indian Medical Association Junior Doctors Network said, “This has deeply unsettled the community… Prolonged duty hours, insufficient rest, and a hostile work environment fostered by certain toxic seniors are pivotal factors exacerbating burnout and mental health issues.”
